Em geral, um design optimizado tem as seguintes características:

  1. Poucas cores.
  2. Formas vectoriais: o desenho é composto por linhas e curvas nítidas, não por píxeis.
  3. Sem degradês: o vinil de recorte não reproduz transições suaves de cor.
  4. Linhas suficientemente grossas: detalhes muito finos podem rasgar ou não cortar correctamente.
  5. Bom espaçamento: evita que partes muito próximas se levantem durante o descasque.
